Early childhood

Core resource

Starting Out Safely is the core early childhood road safety education program, designed to provide road safety information and support to parents and carers of children under six years.

The new Starting Out Safely Road Safety Educator Resource (Sept 2014) is an online resource designed for early childhood educators working with young children and their families in early childhood settings. The following partners contributed to the development of this resource:

  • Catharine Hydon
  • VicRoads
  • Early Learning Association Australia
  • Gowrie Victoria
  • Transport Accident Commission (funding partner)

The Starting Out Safely Road Safety Educator Resource brings to life the National Practices for Early Childhood Road Safety Education. The national practices have been developed by early childhood education and road safety experts across Australia and New Zealand to support evidence based road safety education in early childhood settings. The eight national practices are aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework.

In addition to the main Starting Out Safely Road Safety Educator Resource, VicRoads provides a wide range of other early childhood resources to support educators implementing road safety education for young children and their parents and carers, including new storybooks and related apps titled Click Clack and That's the Sound the Street Makes. A road safety education play mat has also been developed.

To order Starting Out Safely resources, please call VicRoads on (03) 8391 3255.
