Units of Work
Step into Safety: Levels 1-2
This unit supports lower primary students to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to move safely on footpaths and near roads, building the foundations for lifelong road safety. It recognises that young children are still developing awareness and judgement in traffic environments and need explicit teaching, guided practice and adult support to stay safe.
Through practical learning, students build core road-safety skills, learn to recognise safe and unsafe environments, understand key rules and signals, and practise protective behaviours such as stopping, looking, listening and holding an adult’s hand when crossing. They learn to identify hazards, make safer choices, and understand when and how to seek help, strengthening their ability to navigate everyday road environments with care and confidence.
The unit includes clear learning intentions and success criteria, assessment rubrics and differentiated activities to support a range of learning needs, enabling teachers to assess progress and tailor learning for all students.
This unit is fully aligned with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and VTLM 2.0, with a primary focus on Health and Physical Education and English. All relevant content descriptors are embedded within the individual lesson plans.
