Units of Work

Active Travel: Journey Smart Stepping towards active, safe and independent travel

Overview

This unit supports upper primary students to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to travel to and from school safely and independently.

Through practical learning, students build core road-safety skills, understand rules and responsibilities, and develop confidence to plan and navigate safe journeys. They learn to identify hazards, manage risk, and make informed decisions, while also exploring how safer travel choices can benefit their community and the environment.

The unit includes clear learning intentions and success criteria, assessment rubrics and differentiated activities to support a range of learning needs, enabling teachers to assess progress and tailor learning for all students.

This unit of work was developed by Helen Owies at SportlinQ, with funding and support from the Department of Education, Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).
