Road to Zero

Road to Zero is an award-winning, state-of-the-art Education Complex at Melbourne Museum. Developed by the TAC in partnership with Melbourne Museum, Road to Zero offers free curriculum-linked programs for Year 9 and 10 Science and Health & PE and VCE Vocational Major students.

Part of the Victorian Government’s road safety strategy, the program aims to reduce road trauma in pre-learner drivers by building knowledge and awareness to empower young road users to make safe decisions.

Road to Zero draws upon decades of TAC research and pedagogical practice and is co-created with practicing teachers. It examines road safety through an evidence-based and scientific lens, providing a unique experience for students outside the classroom.

Curriculum-linked programs at Road to Zero include:

For Year 9 and 10 students:

For VCE Vocational Major students:

• VCE VM: My First Car

For VCE Health and Human Development students:

• VCE HHD Immersion Program (Units 3 and 4)

Led by knowledgeable road safety facilitators, excursions to Road to Zero comprise two parts:

Experience Space

A 45-minute exploratory exhibition featuring 13 immersive experiences that showcase the latest in multi-sensory interactive technology. Highlights include:

• A 3-minute virtual reality journey where students travel in a car from 1970 to 2055
• A thrilling elevator simulation that recreates a dramatic drop from the 11^th floor of the Royal Exhibition Building
• A digital exploration of the TAC’s iconic Graham sculpture, demonstrating the human body’s vulnerability to crash forces.

Purpose-built Learning Studios

A 75-minute facilitator-led session where students work collaboratively on a team-based challenge to undertake one of two curriculum-linked programs, including:

• Creating a persuasive public health video ad with supporting evidence, pre-shot footage, sound effects and music
• Tackling a virtual reality physics experiment using VR and touch table technology.

The duration of the excursion is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
