Protective behaviours and safety - safe choices on the move

Primary School In-Class Health and PE Year 5 Year 6
Overview

This unit supports Years 5-6 students to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make safe and informed travel decisions in their local community. Through a focus on protective behaviours, students learn to recognise and interpret body clues, assess risk and respond to situations that feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Students build their ability to apply protective behaviours across a range of travel contexts, strengthening decision-making, help-seeking and communication skills. They learn to trust their instincts, take appropriate action and consider how their choices support both their own safety and the safety of others.

The protective behaviours curriculum can be delivered as part of the Respectful Relationships curriculum, supporting a whole-school approach to safety, wellbeing and inclusion.

The unit includes structured lesson sequences, clear learning intentions, success criteria, assessment rubrics and differentiated activities to support diverse learners and enable teachers to monitor progress and tailor learning.

Curriculum Alignment

This unit is fully aligned with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and VTLM 2.0, with a primary focus on Health and Physical Education. All relevant content descriptors are embedded within the individual lesson plans.
