Protective behaviours and safety - pathways to staying safe

Primary School In-Class Health and PE Year 3 Year 4
Overview

This unit supports Years 3-4 students to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to stay safe while travelling in their local community. Through a focus on protective behaviours, students learn to recognise safe and unsafe situations, understand personal boundaries, and identify trusted people and places they can turn to for help.

Students build awareness of how to manage risk in everyday travel contexts, learning to notice early warning signs, trust their instincts and take action to keep themselves and others safe. The unit emphasises help-seeking, decision-making and respectful interactions, supporting increasing independence.

The protective behaviours curriculum can be delivered as part of the Respectful Relationships curriculum, supporting a whole-school approach to safety and wellbeing.

The unit includes clear learning intentions, success criteria, assessment rubrics and differentiated activities to support diverse learners and enable teachers to monitor progress and tailor learning.

Curriculum Alignment

This unit is fully aligned with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and VTLM 2.0, with a primary focus on Health and Physical Education. All relevant content descriptors are embedded within the individual lesson plans.
