Overview

Navigating Risk in a Mobile World supports students in Years 9–10 to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make safe, respectful and responsible decisions as increasingly independent travellers. Through authentic inquiry and action, students are empowered to influence attitudes, challenge unsafe behaviours and contribute to positive travel-safety outcomes within their schools and local communities. This includes a particular focus on the safe and responsible use of e-rideables, such as e-bikes and e-scooters, and the associated legal, social and safety considerations.

Throughout the inquiry cycle, students investigate contemporary travel-safety issues including illegal and modified e-bikes and e-scooters, risk-taking behaviours, peer influence and the challenges of navigating shared community environments. Through exploring protective behaviours, help-seeking strategies and respectful relationships, students develop critical thinking, ethical decision-making, assertive communication and responsible citizenship skills. Students apply their learning through a Street Safe Action Project, designing a campaign, product, solution or behaviour-change initiative that addresses a real travel-safety issue within their school or local community. By examining safety through a lens of prevention, respect and community responsibility, students are empowered to advocate for safer travel practices and influence positive change among their peers, families and wider community.

This protective behaviours and safety unit of work can be delivered as part of the Respectful Relationships curriculum, supporting a whole-school approach to safety and wellbeing.

The unit includes clear learning intentions, success criteria, assessment rubrics and differentiated activities to support diverse learners and enable teachers to monitor progress and tailor learning.
